While I have still got George Orwell’s 6th writing tip in mind, I thought I might as well supply you with Bernard Levin’s thoughts on rule breaking. “You can break every grammatical and syntactical rule consciously when, and only when, you have rendered yourself incapable of breaking them unconsciously” (Levin, Bernard; quoted Guardian (Weekend) 10/10/2009 p42 col 1).
